Qualified, experienced teachers who are passionate about glass art. Every course runs with a maximum of twelve students to ensure individual attention.

Martin McAssey (CertEd)
Martin is a professionally qualified teacher with many years’ experience of teaching stained glass courses in Sheffield, Chesterfield and throughout South Yorkshire. He specialises in teaching stained glass but also runs fused glass and glass painting one-day workshops. Martin has taught stained glass classes for Sheffield College at the Stocksbridge and Walkley Centre as well as Hillsborough College and Chesterfield College. Martin is also a member of the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) and the Artist Network.

Kate Billington BA(Hons) PGCE
Kate trained in leaded glass in Sussex over 35 years ago. Working for 14 years as a secondary school teacher she switched in 2009 to focus on stained glass, both as a maker and tutor. Kate has worked as a stained glass tutor for Derbyshire County Council for many years and has also taught the craft at her home studio, “Billigoat Designs”. Kate joined Martin at his studio in 2018, where she now teaches regular weekday classes and one day workshops.

Laura Mella (MA)
Laura has worked in adult education for 13 years, specialising in supporting students with additional needs at University. A former pupil of Martin and Kate, Laura developed a love of stained glass after attending a one-day workshop at the Hamlet in 2019. After attending classes for a number of years, she set up a home studio and makes and sells her work at craft fairs and online as “Mella Glass Studio”. Laura started working at Martin McAssey Glass in 2025, initially assisting Martin and Kate’s sessions before moving on to teach workshops in traditional stained glass and the Tiffany technique.
