Commissions, Restorations and Repairs
Martin can restore and repair stained glass windows to order using traditional methods and materials. These windows can be used as internal decoration or used as external windows as they are fully weatherproof. All commissions for restorations and repairs are handled by Martin who will guide you through the commission process, this will include:
• The preparation of designs from your ideas and brief
• Working with you and your designs to produce new or restored stained glass panels
• Producing new or restored stained glass panels to match or complement existing glass
• Removal and installation of the stained glass panel(s) if required
The cost of restoring an old leaded panel is much the same as making a new one of the same design. It can sometimes be cheaper to make a new panel from scratch, as the cost of restoration will sometimes exceed the cost of a brand new panel. However, the reason why some people prefer to pay for a repair is simply, it is often impossible to exactly match old glass with new. This can be a problem when trying to replace an old panel that is one of a set.
It is sometimes the case that all an old lead panel needs is to be flattened (panels can bow with age). Once the lead joints have been re-soldering and re-cemented the finished panel can be cleaned and re-fitted. However, at other times only a complete rebuild will suffice; to judge whether a lead panel needs completely rebuilding it is an idea to look at the condition of the lead rather than the condition of the glass as lead can deteriorate with age. If pieces of glass are missing or damaged Martin will whenever possible try to find the best match for old glass and try to match it with the best available modern glass on offer.
Whatever your needs Martin will work with you on a one-to-one basis to ensure your commission is an enjoyable process, if you would like to contact Martin with an enquiry about a restoration or repair please get in touch by using the Contact section of this site.
