FAQs

Everything you need to know about our workshops, courses, and studio — your questions answered.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch — Martin is happy to help.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. Some students like to bring a tool box or work apron, but these aren’t compulsory.

Do I need to provide my own tools?

No — all tools are provided. You’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Do I need to buy materials?

For beginners, Martin provides all materials (glass, lead, solder) for your first two projects. After that, you purchase your own glass; lead and solder can be bought from Martin.

For one-day workshops, all materials are included in the price.

What should I wear?

Old clothes are recommended. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory — no open-toed shoes or sandals.

How many people are in each class?

Weekly classes have a maximum of twelve students; one-day workshops a maximum of eight. Each student has their own workbench.

I’m pregnant — is this a problem?

The courses involve working with lead and solder. For safety reasons, Martin recommends that pregnant women do not attend.

Is there disabled access?

Yes, access is not an issue. If you have a disability or special needs, please contact Martin before booking so he can make sure everything is set up to suit you.

Can children attend?

For health and safety reasons, Martin does not run courses for anyone under the age of 16. Students aged 16–18 must be accompanied by an adult.

How do I get to the studio?

The studio is at the Learning Centre, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S7 2QW. When you arrive, the Learning Centre is on your left as you enter the site; Martin’s studio is accessed from the rear of the building by the car park.

Parking: There is a free car park at the rear of the Learning Centre.

Bus: Services 97 and 98 (Dore / Totley direction) stop nearby.

Train: The nearest station is Dore, approximately 0.5 miles along Abbeydale Road South.

Where can I store my work between classes?

Each student has a designated shelf in the studio for storing work and materials between sessions.

How can I pay?

Once Martin has confirmed your place he will request payment. You can pay by:

  • Bank transfer (BACS) — contact Martin for details
  • Cheque — payable to Martin McAssey Glass
  • Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) — in person at the studio only; not over the phone

What is the cancellation policy?

Martin will always try to move you to another date if you can no longer attend (subject to availability). If a transfer isn’t possible:

  • Cancelled more than 4 weeks before: 90% refund
  • Cancelled 1–4 weeks before: 50% refund
  • Cancelled 7 days or less before: no refund

All cancellations incur a 10% admin fee. Martin cannot make exceptions to this policy in order to keep prices fair for everyone.

Can I book a one-to-one lesson?

Yes. Contact Martin to discuss availability and cost.

Can I make any project I want?

Once you’ve completed the two starter projects, yes — Martin will work with you one-to-one to plan, source materials for and build your own piece.
